There are two round ligaments, one on either side of the abdominal area and support the uterus as it stretches and grows. During pregnancy, they stretch to become tighter and thinner and that stretching can cause tension and pain.
It typically feels like a sharp, sticking pain on one or both sides of the lower abdomen. These pains will often happen after a sudden movement. Sometimes, round ligament pain can feel like a dull ache when we are particularly active during the day.
Sometimes, baby growth is a cause of pain. With baby growth, the uterus stretches and puts strain on the round ligaments. If the baby is not in an ideal position, he or she can push on one of the ligaments and cause a shooting pain from the strain of supporting the uterus. Have you ever coughed, sneezed, or laughed and felt a shooting pain? Yep, that can be round ligament pain!
Poor alignment of your spine and/or hips can cause the uterus to become slightly misaligned as the bones its attached to aren’t in their proper position. Misalignments can create a cascade of events that can trigger round ligament pain.
This is where Chiropractic comes into play! As a Webster Certified Chiropractor, Dr. Kristin analyzes the bones of the pelvis for any misalignments and gently re-aligns them. As the round ligaments are attached to the bones of the pelvis, any misalignments could potentially add to the stress and tension that is typical for the round ligaments during pregnancy. With everything lined up properly, there is less tension on the round ligaments, and they can function as they should with less pain.
